Welcome to Sweetgrass Jacobs, home of Peg Bostwick and Joe Bohr. Sweetgrass is a 40-acre farm located in central Michigan between St. Johns and Lansing. We are long-term breeders having purchased our first Jacob ewe in 1987, and our flock is 100% registered Jacobs
Joe and I are both (mostly retired now) biologists, and selected Jacobs in response to dual interests in conservation breeding and raising sheep for the handspinning market. The hardiness and self-sufficiency of Jacobs served us well during busy years of working and raising our two (now adult) kids. Our focus in raising Jacobs can be summed up as follows.
|
Conservation Breeding: We follow the principals of conservation breeding, doing our best to support the continuation of the Jacob breed as whole. For us that means maintaining the original qualities of Jacob sheep, while selecting sound and correct breeding animals for our flock and for sale to others. We are long time members of The Livestock Conservancy (formerly the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy). We were fortunate to be able to start our flock with some great established bloodlines, including Puddleduck, Jacobs Ladder, and Fieldwood among others. In 2001 we were able to bring in the sweet and wonderful ram Huntsberger Drummond from the Butter Island flock – which was established with 100% Scottish imports. Genetic diversity within our flock has been maintained primarily by use of rams (and occasional ewes) from numerous Jacobs members, as you will see in our pedigrees. Conservation breeding is a group effort of many breeders, facilitated by the Jacob Sheep Breeders Association (JSBA). |

Sale of wool and other products: Jacob wool is beautiful and is popular with fiber artists due to its soft and resilient handle, and the range of colors within a single fleece. We put an emphasis on the production of Jacob wool that is clean and desirable for handspinning and fiber arts. Our preference is to sell our best fleeces as they come off the sheep, leaving choices regarding processing up to the buyer. Many handspinners love Jacob wool, and we try to give them the best. |
